These homemade breadsticks are my copycat of Little Caesars crazy bread! They are crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, and coated in the most addictive garlic butter. I recommend dipping these in some marinara sauce for a delicious appetizer on pizza night.

    About This Recipe

If you think making breadsticks from scratch sounds complicated, I hope you'll give this easy breadstick recipe a try. It uses just a handful of ingredients and comes together in less than two hours (most of the time is just waiting for the dough to rise).

My brother and I grew up eating crazy bread from Little Caesars. We would bike to Littler Caesars with our friends, order a pack for each of us, and eat it outside the mall. I remember them being just about the greatest thing a 13-year-old could eat.

The first time I made breadsticks at home, I was blown away. They were even better than the ones I remembered eating as a kid. These breadsticks are golden on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and brushed with the best garlic butter sauce.

P.S. My family used to run a pizza place, and the garlic butter sauce I'm sharing is based on what we used at the restaurant!

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

All-purpose flour: Make sure to spoon and level the flour to avoid compacting it.

Sugar & salt: Add flavor to the dough

Instant yeast: These breadsticks will not rise without it 🙂 If you use active yeast, make sure to activate it in warm sugar water first.

Warm water: Around 110°F is the best temperature. Any higher and you risk killing the yeast.

Butter: For moisture and richness in the crumb.

Garlic butter topping: This is made with butter, garlic powder, and salt.

    Instructions

STEP 1: In a stand mixer bowl, whisk together the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.

STEP 4: Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 45-60 minutes. For the warm place, I preheat my oven for 30 seconds, turn it off, and place the bowl inside with the oven light on.

    Ingredients

    For the dough

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 tablespoon sugar
    • 1 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast (½ a packet)
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • ¾ cup warm water (110℉)
    • tablespoon melted butter

    For the garlic topping

    • 2 tablespoons melted butter
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ¼ teaspoon salt

    Optional toppings

    • grated parmesan
    • Italian seasoning/oregano

    Instructions

    • In the bowl of a stand mixer, whisk the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
    • Add the warm water and olive oil, then mix with the dough hook - or knead by hand- for 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is fairly smooth. If the dough is dry, add up to ¼ more water.
    • Transfer to a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let the dough rise in a warm spot for 30-45 minutes, or until doubled in size. For the warm spot, I like to turn my oven on for 30 seconds, turn it off, and place the bowl inside with the oven light on.
    • Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 9-inch long breadstick. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 20 minutes. In the meantime, preheat your oven to 450°F, and make the garlic topping by combining all the ingredients in a small bowl.
    • Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly browned. While still hot, brush on the garlic butter. Enjoy!
