    About This Recipe

Whenever I cook for my wife and me, I'm always competing with her childhood food memories. For example, every time I make ribs, they get compared to the ribs her dad made that one time they went camping. We've been to rib festivals and BBQ restaurants, and still, nothing compares to them. Even when I make ribs at home, she still says nothing beats her dad's.

For the record, her dad does not cook. The ribs were from Costco and grilled on a $30 camping grill. I keep telling her it's not the ribs, and she was just starved, but she swears they were the best thing ever.

Now, this French toast recipe is different. She said this French toast was the best shes ever had and way better than anything her parents made. Apparently, her parents' French toast was bland and soggy. This one is quite the opposite!

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Bread: Any type of bread will work for this recipe. I know many people say stale bread is the best, but I find fresh bread is completely fine. Stale bread will obviously absorb more liquid, but fresh bread still absorbs a lot. Brioche is my favorite for the extra richness it gives.

Eggs: Eggs are essential for the custard base.

Milk: I used whole milk, but you can use any type of dairy or nondairy milk, like oat, almond, or cashew.

Sugar: For a bit of sweetness. You can substitute this with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.

Cinnamon & vanilla extract: These add warm and cozy flavor.

Salt: This will make all the flavors pop.

    Instructions

    egg custard whisked in bowl.

STEP 1: In a large bowl, whisk together all the ingredients except the bread.

STEP 2: Dip both sides of the bread in the batter.

STEP 3: Transfer to a hot, greased non-stick skillet.

second side of toast cooking in pan.

STEP 4: Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden and cooked through. If the inside is not cooking before the outside is done, reduce the heat to medium-low.
