These homemade Belgian Waffles are crisp and golden on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. We love serving them with a pat of butter and maple syrup. Feel free to use whatever toppings you like.

    About This Recipe

It's time for another breakfast recipe! One of my New Year's resolutions this year was to improve my breakfast game. And what better way to do that than with classic Belgian waffles? My wife has also been requesting these for at least a month, so I'm glad to be finally making them!

To be completely honest, I am not a waffle person. I LOVE anything soft and fluffy, but if I had to choose, I would pick pancakes over waffles any day... but these Belgian waffles are so good, I might have changed my mind.

This waffle recipe is one of the best recipes for a lazy weekend. It uses basic pantry ingredients and comes together in minutes. The best part is you do not have to monitor it like with pancakes. Your waffle maker will do all the work. Just scoop the batter in and wait for it to tell you the waffles are ready.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

    Flour: I used all-purpose flour.

Milk: I recommend whole milk for the best flavor.

    Egg: Provide structure and flavor

Baking powder: 4 teaspoons is the perfect amount for the optimal fluffiness.

Sugar and salt:  Feel free to add more sugar if you like your waffles extra sweet. I usually just add more maple syrup though.

Butter: The butter should be melted into a liquid. When you mix it with the wet ingredients, it may solidify because the wet ingredients are cold. That's OKAY. As long as the butter is evenly distributed in the batter, it will be fine. You can also replace the butter with vegetable oil.

Vanilla extract: This is optional, but gives good flavor.

    Instructions

dry ingredients being whisked in bowl.

STEP 1: Whisk together the dry ingredients in a large bowl.

    wet ingredients mixed in bowl.

STEP 2: Whisk the wet ingredients in another bowl. Or just measure everything in a liquid measuring cup and whisk it directly in there.

    batter in bowl.

STEP 3: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until JUST combined. There should be plenty of lumps in the batter.

    batter scooped into waffle iron.

STEP 4: Grease the waffle iron with some oil, butter, or cooking spray. Scoop the batter into the waffle iron (the exact amount depends on your waffle maker- be careful not to add too much). Cook until golden brown and crispy on the outside. Repeat with the remaining batter.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 3 tablespoons sugar
    • 4 teaspoons baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 ½ cups milk
    • 2 large eggs
    • ⅓ cup melted butter (or oil)
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Instructions

    • Preheat your waffle iron. In the meantime prepare your batter.
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. If your ingredients are cold, the butter may solidify into tiny chunks but that's OKAY. The important thing is that it is evenly mixed throughout.
    • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until JUST combined. Be careful not to overmix.
    • Grease the waffle iron with some oil, butter, or cooking spray. Scoop the batter into the waffle iron (the exact amount depends on your waffle iron so you may need to experiment a little). Cook until golden brown and crispy, and repeat with the rest of the batter. Serve with maple syrup or your favorite waffle toppings!

I'm always improvising recipes especially when making waffles. Has anyone tried just using whole wheat flour, almond flour, ground flaxeed and use coconut sugar? Also most recipes use vanilla extract for flavoring. In addition to vanilla added to the wet ingredients, I use cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves to the dry ingredients to spice up them waffles. Comes out perfect, light and fluffy.

The taste was great, but i had to add at least 1/4 cup more milk because it was way too thick

Your flour may have been too compact when u measured it. Next time u can try fluffing it, and maybe spooning it into a measuring cup. But adding extra milk also works

Ran out of Bisquick and my girls wanted waffles so found this recipe and will no longer be buying Bisquick for our house. This recipe was super quick and easy. My girls loved and said they tasted better from scratch so definitely will be saving and doing this from now on.

Used King Arthur gluten-free (all I had in the house) turned out delicious once my husband noticed I forgot to add the milk 🤣
Halved the recipe and had 3 mini waffles left over for just the two of us. So good. Will absolutely be using this recipe again!
