This Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is DIVINE. It's one of my most requested recipes from family and friends. It was passed down to me by a friend's mom back when I was in middle school. It's incredibly soft, moist, and loaded with chocolate chips. This is the BEST banana bread recipe you will ever try- I guarantee it.

    About This Recipe

My friend's mom used to make the absolute best banana bread. Her banana bread is still, to this day, the most moist banana bread I've ever had. It's kind of hard to describe, but it was almost "gooey" in its texture, but in the best possible way (way better than how I'm describing it). And of course, it was loaded with chocolate chips, which made it even better.

I remember going to my friend's house after school, and getting excited every time I smelled it baking, because I knew I was going to be getting a slice!

Luckily, my friend's mom isn't one of those people who guard their recipes with their lives. She happily shared the recipe with me, and now I get to share it with you! The secret is to add some Greek yogurt or sour cream. It makes the bread super moist and rich. Who knew!

Btw, if you're looking for more banana recipes, you can try my banana pancakes, which are always a crowd favorite!

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Bananas: Make sure these are very ripe. The more bruises, the better, as long as there isn't mold growing on the outside. Ripe bananas will give the banana bread the softest texture and also more natural sweetness.

All-purpose flour: Make sure you spoon and level the flour to get the correct amount. Or, you can use a scale to be the most accurate.

Baking soda: Reacts with the Greek yogurt to make the bread rise.

Unsalted butter: Provides most of the richness. I recommend using unsalted butter so we can control the salt. If you use salted butter, you can add less salt or skip the salt altogether.

White sugar + brown sugar: My friend's mom used a combination of sugars for the most balanced flavor.

Greek yogurt: This is the secret ingredient! Any type of Greek yogurt should work. I typically use Greek yogurt with at least 5% fat since it has a thick texture without additives. Low-fat yogurts usually have thickeners added to make them thick.

Eggs: Help bind all the ingredients together:

    Vanilla extract: For flavor.

Chocolate chips: My friend's mom uses semi-sweet chocolate chips, but I actually prefer dark chocolate chips since I find the bread is already very sweet. Either will work.

    Instructions

parchment paper on bottom of bread pan.

STEP 1: Preheat your oven to 325°F. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan, and line the bottom with parchment paper so it's easier to pop the bread out when it's done baking.

    dry mixture whisked in bowl.

STEP 2: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

butter and sugars beaten until fluffy.

STEP 3: In a large bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and brown sugar for 1–2 minutes until fluffy. It should become slightly paler in color.

add banana, yogurt, and eggs to batter.

STEP 4: Mix in the mashed bananas. Then, add the yogurt, eggs, and vanilla. Stir everything together until it's fully combined.

    chocolate chips stirred into batter.

STEP 5: Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until there's no dry flour left. Then, fold in the chocolate chips.

sprinkled chocolate chips on top of batter.

STEP 6: Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and smooth out the top. If you like, sprinkle a few extra chocolate chips on top.

STEP 7: Bake for 60-75 minutes. It's done when a toothpick poked in the center comes out with NO wet batter. A few moist crumbs are OK.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour (180g)
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ½ cup melted unsalted butter (110g)
    • ½ cup sugar
    • ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
    • 1 ½ cups mashed ripe bananas (about 3-4 bananas)
    • ½ cup Greek yogurt (or sour cream)
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • ¾ cup chocolate chips (plus extra for sprinkling on top)

    Instructions

    • Preheat your oven to 325°F. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan, and line with parchment paper so the bread doesn't stick.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt, then set that aside.
    • In a large bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and brown sugar for 1–2 minutes.
    • Mix in the mashed bananas. Then, add the yogurt, eggs, and vanilla. Stir everything together until it's fully combined.
    • Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until there's no dry flour left. Then, fold in the chocolate chips.
    • Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and smooth out the top. If you like, sprinkle a few extra chocolate chips on top. Bake for 65-75 minutes. It's done when a toothpick poked in the center comes out with no wet batter; a few crumbs are OK.
    • Let the bread cool in the pan for about 45 minutes. Once it's cool, slide a knife around the edges of the pan, then flip it upside down to release it. Slice, and serve!
