    About This Recipe

There's nothing better than the smell of freshly baked buns, and these quick hamburger buns are no exception. Made with only 7 simple ingredients, they're soft and fluffy, and are perfect for your next BBQ or cookout!

Some people question whether hamburger buns can be made in one hour. The answer is yes! I use these three simple tricks to help the dough rise much faster:

    1. Create a warm place for the dough to rise. Yeast works best in a warm environment. My favorite trick is to turn the oven on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off. The oven will be slightly warmer than room temperature, which helps the dough rise faster.
    2. Start your dough with warm water. Warm water helps activate the yeast quickly. Aim for a temperature around 110°F. We want the water to be warm but not too hot. If the water gets past 140°F, the yeast will start to die.
    3. Use a little extra yeast. Most recipes call for one tablespoon, but if you double the amount to two tablespoons, the dough rises twice as fast! Yes, there is a bit more yeasty flavor, but I actually don't mind it, and it's a great trade-off for half the rising time.

Don't let the idea of baking homemade hamburger buns intimidate you. It couldn't be easier, and once you try these, you'll never buy store-bought again.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

All-purpose flour: All-purpose flour is all you need for soft and fluffy hamburger buns. As always, make sure to spoon and level it into your measuring cup to guarantee the most accurate measurement.

Instant yeast: I like using instant yeast because it does not need to be bloomed first. If you have active yeast, make sure to bloom it in warm water and sugar before adding the rest of your ingredients. Also, make sure your yeast is not expired!

Vegetable oil: This is what gives the buns a tender and "buttery" texture. You can also use melted butter, but personally, I think oil works fine and is healthier because it has less saturated fat.

Sugar: Hamburger buns need a bit of sweetness to make them delicious.

Salt: For enhancing all the flavors.

Eggs: We'll need one egg for the dough and one for the egg wash. The egg wash is what gives the buns their shiny exterior.

    Instructions

Start this recipe by preheating your oven to 350°F for about 30 seconds, then turn it off and leave the oven light on. This creates a warm place for the dough to rise later.

wet ingredients mixed in stand mixer bowl.

STEP 1: In a stand mixer bowl, combine the warm water, vegetable oil, sugar, egg, yeast, and salt.

STEP 2: Add 3 ¼ cups of flour and knead with the dough hook for 5 minutes until it no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl. If the dough is still sticky, gradually add up to ¼ cup more.

STEP 3: Divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll them into balls. Place on a large parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 3 inches apart. Gently flatten each ball slightly.
