    About This Recipe

This green bean casserole recipe is one of my favorite Thanksgiving side dishes! Instead of making a homemade sauce, I actually prefer making it with canned soup. Thanksgiving is one of the most hectic dinners to prepare, and canned soup makes the entire process much quicker (and easier).

My green bean casserole has a generous amount of crispy onions. I love how the savory flavors balance the tender, fresh green beans. It's cozy, classic, and Thanksgiving would not be the same without it.

This recipe is perfect for the holidays because the ingredients are simple, and you can prep it ahead of time. Blanch the beans and assemble the casserole up to two days in advance, then store it in the fridge until the big day. When you're ready to serve, just bake, and top with those crispy onions 5 minutes before it's done!

If you're looking for a classic side dish for Thanksgiving this year, I hope you'll try my recipe. My wife insists on having it every year now.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Green Beans: Fresh or frozen green beans will both work for this recipe. Try to find green beans that are pre-cut and trimmed, because it will be less work for you.

Condensed cream of mushroom soup: This comes in a small can at the grocery store. You can also use cream of chicken.

Milk: To thin out the sauce.

Soy sauce: This helps add some umami to the sauce. If you don't have this, just add a bit more salt.

    Black pepper: Add to taste.

Fried onions: You can find these in the grocery aisle where salad toppings are. If not, the Indian section usually has fried onions for cheap, but I've found they are not as tasty.

    Instructions

STEP 1: Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil (I usually do ½ tablespoon salt per quart). Cook the beans for 3-4 minutes. Drain.

green beans mixed with other ingredients in bowl.

STEP 2: In a large mixing bowl, mix together the green beans, soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and ⅔ cup of onions.

green bean filling spread into baking dish.

STEP 3: Spread into the baking dish.
