This Brown Sugar Toast was a staple of my childhood. It only has a few ingredients so almost anyone can make it. Even though it's just bread, butter, and sugar, it has always satisfied my dessert cravings at home.

My family was pretty poor growing up, so we didn't have many snacks at home (at least not the ones of a typical middle-class family). I remember one time we had fruit roll-ups, and I tried to eat two. My sister got mad at me because we couldn't afford for me to have more than one.

Whenever I think about how poor my family was, I always think back to eating brown sugar toast. This was something my sister introduced to me. We used to eat it whenever we craved something sweet. I did not even know other people did this until I saw it trending on TikTok. But apparently, every poor person did this.

    How to make it

The simplest way to make it is to combine butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon and spread it on toast. Another (slightly fancier) way is to spread it on untoasted bread and grill it on the pan. Personally, I prefer grilling it on the pan because the bread tastes better and some of the sugar will caramelize.

    What bread to use?

When I was a kid, I used Wonder Bread because it was all we could afford. But today I'm using high-quality milk bread. Milk bread is made with milk and eggs so it has a richer crumb than regular bread.

Another option that I have tried is brioche buns. The toast comes out very rich and almost tastes like a budget cinnamon roll.

Calling all poor people. Time to make your favorite snack. This recipe has been locked away in my memory, but recently I had a craving for some nostalgia so I made it for a snack.
