These Spam Fries are cut into sticks and deep-fried with panko breadcrumbs. They are crispy, tasty, and extremely easy to make. They are a bit heavy to eat on their own, so I have included a recipe for katsu sauce as well.

    What Spam to use?

I highly recommend using low-sodium Spam because regular Spam is very salty. Whenever I need to cook with Spam, I always use the low-sodium version. Yes, they call it "low-sodium" but it is still very salty compared to most foods. A full container still has more sodium than the daily recommended intake for an average person.

    How to bread Spam fries?

The breading process is nothing complicated. You will need to prepare an egg wash and a shallow dish of breadcrumbs. Just dip the Spam fry in the egg wash then coat each side in breadcrumbs.

One important thing I have learned is to shake off the excess batter, otherwise too much breading will stick to the Spam. To do this, I repeatedly tap the Spam on the side of the bowl until most of it has come off.

    Deep-frying vs air-frying

Actually, I was worried deep-frying would be too greasy, so I tried air-frying them as well. They turned out pretty good.

    Deep-frying:

breaded Spam sticks being deep-fried in oil.
deep-fried Spam sticks drying on wire rack.

    Air-frying:

    Spam fries before air-frying.
    Spam fries after air-frying.

As you can see from the pictures above, there is not much of a difference at all besides a bit less color on the air-fried ones. If you're looking for a less oily and easier option, I recommend air-frying them. Make sure to spray them generously with oil otherwise they get a bit of a "bready" taste.

    Ingredients

    • 1 can low-sodium Spam
    • 2 large eggs
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs

    Katsu sauce

    • ¼ cup ketchup
    • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
    • 2 teaspoons sugar

    Instructions

    • Cut the Spam into ½-inch thick sticks.
    • In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, flour, salt, and black pepper.
    • In another shallow dish, add the breadcrumbs.
    • Dip a stick of Spam into the egg wash, shaking off excess, then transfer to the dish of breadcrumbs. Toss the breadcrumbs all around the Spam to evenly coat it. Transfer to a baking sheet.
    • Option 1 Deep-fry: Heat about 1 inch of oil in a high-walled pot to 350°F. Cook 5-6 pieces of Spam at a time for 2-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Transfer to a wire rack to drain excess oil.
    • Option 2 Air-fry: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F. Place the Spam inside with a little space between each one. Spray generously with oil and air-fry for 5 minutes. Flip them over and spray generously with oil again. Air-fry for another 5 minutes.
    • For the katsu sauce, just combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
