Croffles are made by cooking frozen puff pastry in a waffle maker. I saw these going viral on social media again so of course I had to try making them. Since there are already lots of sweet croffle recipes online, I decided to do a savory version instead!

I don't know about you, but I definitely prefer savory breakfasts. Sure, sweet breakfasts are nice, but they kind of make you feel sluggish once the sugar rush wears off. My wife is also a late sleeper so we usually have breakfast closer to lunchtime, and by then I'm usually craving something savory.

These savory croffles were the perfect option for me. I added toppings like hot dogs, cheese, bacon, and Spam, and they all came out super delicious. Feel free to use whatever savory options come to your mind. Next time I might even add some corn like in my corn waffles recipe.

Puff pastry vs. crescent roll: which is better?

box of puff pastry next to tin of crescent roll dough.
rolled crescent roll and rolled puff pastry next to each other.

I decided to cook both of these in a head-to-head test to see which was better. I didn't fill them with any toppings so I could taste just the pastry alone.

    Rolling

puff pastry being rolled into croissant shape.
crescent roll being rolled into croissant shape.

Both the puff pastry and crescent roll were very easy to roll. For the puff pastry, I had to divide each sheet into 4 four triangles. To form the croissant, you just roll from the wide side to the short side.

    Cooking

puff pastry and crescent roll croffles in waffle iron.

I cooked both for about 3 minutes. The first thing I noticed was the crescent roll got much darker than the puff pastry. The puff pastry also oozed out a lot of grease, so you have to clean the waffle iron between batches.

    Taste test

In terms of taste, my wife and I both agreed the puff pastry was significantly better than the crescent roll. As you can see from the picture above, the puff pastry was very flaky like a croissant but the crescent rolls did not flake at all.

    Topping Ideas

Here are some of the options I tried in order from my favorite to least favorite (but keep in mind my least favorite was still VERY tasty, just not as amazing as the others). I also added cheese to each one because why not:

    Bacon:

bacon and cheese spread on triangle puff pastry.
cross section of bacon and cheese croffle.

My personal favorite! I chopped the bacon into small pieces and cooked them on medium heat for 10 minutes until all the fat was rendered out and they got super crispy. The texture is what really made these the best.

    Hot dogs:

hotdogs and cheese spread on triangle puff pastry.
cross section of hotdog and cheese croffle.

I chopped the hotdogs into small pieces and pan-fried them for a few minutes. Not as good as the bacon but still good.

    Spam:

Spam and cheese spread on triangle puff pastry.
cross section of Spam and cheese croffle.

This was actually my wife's favorite but she is obsessed with Spam so her opinion is biased here. I used the low-sodium Spam, but I found they actually lacked a bit of flavor, so if you try this, make sure you use the regular one.

    Savory Croffles (Croissant Waffles)

These savory croffles are made with puff pastry, bacon, and cheese. I did a side-by-side comparison of croffles made with puffy pastry and crescent rolls, and the puff pastry was much flakier. See the blog post for the full breakdown with pictures.
